The Build
This is a giant LEGO Darth Vader and yes it is made out of wood. The guy is about 40 inches tall and made completely out of MDF (except for the head) and bolted together. The head is a store bought storage container that comes in the shape of a giant LEGO minifig head. The rest of the body was made to the same scale as the head. I even made a light saber to scale for him, but it is not shown in any of these pictures.
This was made for my son’s 5th birthday party which is going to be LEGO Star Wars themed. I thought that it would be a cool piece for photos and just to talk about it. It was also a lot of fun to make. Still to come is the helmet. It is so iconic I didn’t want to rush into making it.
As with a real LEGO minifig, this one is jointed in all of the same places, but as mentioned, he is bolted together so we won’t be taking him apart and putting him back together again too often.
For more photos of the construction process go to the link below. The pictures of the light saber are available there too. The light saber is made out of PVC pipes, a large fluorescent light bulb cover and a high powered LED flashlight to make it glow.
